Emile Vernon 1913, French, Young Woman by a Lemon Tree, Oil on Canvas

A painter who dedicated his entire career to the embellishment of women, Émile Vernon received his initial training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours. His entry into the official art world took place in 1898 upon exhibiting his work at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and at the Exposition des Beaux-Arts et des Arts Decoratifs in Tours.

He followed the apprenticeship from William Bouguereau who excelled in highlighting the female body which had an influence on Vernon's art. Specialized in depicting women and young girls in leisure, and bright colors placed in natural setting with bountiful vegetation, flowers and fruits.

This present painting is dated from 1913 and was completed towards the end of the artist’s career. Full of charm and appeal, Vernon’s smooth image illustrates a sentimental and bucolic vein truly appreciated among art connoisseurs Vernon’s works can be found in the Theatre of Nevers, Theatre of Châtellerault, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tours, Tours City Hall.
