A French silver '950'. ewer and wash basin in the Rocaille style. Both vessels depict engraved motifs of stylized acanthus leaf and bulrush 'typha' The round basin bears a foliate scalloped outer rim of acanthus leaves, grapes, wines and shells. Based on its hallmarks, this set was created in France for export during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Hallmarks: 1. Mercury in a hexagon: 950 silver and French made for export between 1878-1973; 2. Individual maker’s mark in a lozenge: illegible. Excellent condition. Exquisite engraving work. Ewer and basin have a historically significant function as before the late 1500’s society ate with their fingers. During the Renaissance 'early 16th century' guests were offered scented water served from ewers to wash one’s hands. Sets such as this one were originally produced for important occasions and celebrations.
